Phel Steinmetz, Associate Professor of Visual Arts at UCSD, has been photographing the social landscape for thirty years. His contribution to this show is "Río al Norte" (River to the North); it consists of ten sets of couplets (two paired color images) representing many of the journeys of "illegal" migrant workers north from the border to U.S. jobs. Steinmetz uses the various types of water vessels carried by the workers to characterize the personal journey.
