The vegetation coverage was created as part of the Tijuana River Watershed GIS database project. It includes information on the general vegetation classes in the watershed. A modified Holland classification was used to identify the vegetation groups. Riparian areas are mapped at a resolution of .5 acre, while non-riparian areas have a 5 acre minimum mapping unit.
Vegetation was interpolated from 10 m SPOT satellite imagery and NOAA aerial photographs at a resolution of 1:50,000. Vegetation was groundtruthed through field work in 1994 by SDSU researchers.

Sinopsis: La cobertura de vegetación fue creada como parte del proyecto de la base de datos GIS de la cuenca del río de Tijuana. Vegetation polygons for the United States portion of the Tijuana River Watershed.

Field observations of the vegetation in the Mexican portion of the watershed were mapped onto clear mylar sheets overlaying 1:12500 aerial photography. The photos and mylars were then used to heads-up digitize the vegetation polygon boundaries using a SPOT image as a reference. Once the boundaries were completed, topology was generated and the polygons were attributed with the proper vegetation codes and descriptions. The Mexican portion was then merged with vegetation obtained from the San Diego Association of Governments and the County of San Diego for the United States portion to complete the overall coverage for the watershed. Clipped to study area and attributes translated by IRSC.

Descripción del Proceso: Las observaciones de campo de la vegetación en la parte mexicana de la cuenca fueron trazadas sobre hojas transparentes de mylar sobrepuestas a fotografías aéreas a una escala de 1:12500. Las fotografías y los mylars se utilizaron para avanzar la digitación de los límites del polígono de la vegetación usando imágenes SPOT como referencia. Una vez que los límites fueron determinados, la topología fue generada y se fijaron los atributos de los polígonos con los códigos y las descripciones de vegetación apropiados.
